TÁNDEM CIA. de Danza

The choreographer Leticia Alvarado founded TÁNDEM in 1994, her work is based on a continuous research for an individual language that goes beyond a simple choreographic code.
Each of the dancers that integrate this company has the artistic education and the professional experience that allows them to have an active participation in the investigation and creation of the dance pieces. The process begins with the exploration inside the studio and ends with the stage performance. TÁNDEM aims to conform a creative space that seeks to produce a deep emotional impact on the audience.

At present TÁNDEM has performed at Mexico’s most important theatres and has received constant recognition from diverse competitions awards and press releases.

In 1995 the company won first place at the XVI Premio INBA-UAM II Concurso Continental de Danza Contemporánea with the choreography Donde cesa la nostalgia. This piece also received the award for best dancer and best original music.

TÁNDEM Cía de Danza has received, numerous times, financial support by the FONCA (National Fund for Culture and Arts) and the INBA (National Institute of Fine Arts). The company received an award for choreographic production in 1990 and 1993 and The Grant for Culture Co-inversion in 1994, 1997 and 2000, the most important amongst others.

In 2002, with the project Mozart y las nubes the company was awarded by the program ‘Artes Por Todas Partes’ from the Secretaría de la Cultura de la Ciudad de México and the Programa Nacional de Danza Escolar named by the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) and the INBA.

TÁNDEM Cía de Danza participated in the dance season ‘Milenium 2003’ at the CNA (National Centre for the Arts) presenting the project Los sentidos del corazón. Schubert, la muerte y la doncella with live music performed by Arcano, winner of the First National String Quartet Contest.

In 2004, the company is merited with award Apoyo a Grupos Artísticos Profesionales, ‘México en Escena’, by the FONCA, and in December of the same year the company participated during the season ‘Mujeres Coreógrafas’ at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, presenting a new piece called Lejos de mañana.

TÁNDEM CIA. De Danza, performed again in 2005 at the Palacio de Bellas Artes with the above mentioned dance piece, Los sentidos del corazón, with live music performed by Arcano, recent winner of the Reina Sofía Award in Spain.
During this year the company celebrated their tenth anniversary with performances at the VIII Festival Internacional de Danza Moderna in Morelia, Cuarto Encuentro Internacional de Danza Contemporanea in Guadalajara and the 25th Festival Internacional de Danza Contemporanea ‘Lila Lopez’ in San Luis Potosí and at the Teatro de las Artes at the CNA

In 2006, the company receives financial support from the FONCA with the program ‘México en Escena’.
TÁNDEM’s Mozart y las nubes was commissioned for the Plan Nacional de Becas de Danza SEP-INBA, gave 18 performances for preschool education and elementary school and was also performed at the Festival ‘Danza… un oceano’ in Los Cabos, Baja California.

That year the company premiered Rosa de Hierro at the Teatro de la Danza in Mexico. The choreography was inspired on the theatre writer Jean Genet and it was also presented at many theatres such as: Teatro Miguel Covarrubias of UNAM, Teatro Juárez of Guanajuato, IX International Festival de Danza Contemporánea in Morelia, Teatro Benito Juarez in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua.
This piece was programmed in various Dance Festivals in Mexico City with performances in a wide range of independent theatres: Teatro de la Independencia, Teatro Wilberto Cantón and Teatro Tepeyac, between others.

At the beginning of 2007, TÁNDEM is awarded for second time with ‘Mexico en Escena’, that the FONCA grants only to the best performing art groups of the country.

This same year the season began in February performing at the Teatro de la Danza of Mexico City, Festival de Danza Contemporánea de la Comarca Lagunera; Muestra de Danza Contemporánea de Puebla; Festival Internacional de Danza Contemporánea Oc-Ohtic in Mérida, between others, as well as at the Teatro de las Artes del Centro Nacional de las Artes.

In 2008 Tándem Cía de Danza presented two new dance pieces: “Miguel Angel. Explosión de un Autorretrato” (“Miguel Angel. Explosion of a self- portrait”) at Teatro de la Ciudad and “Estudios no identificados” (“Unidentified Studies”) at  Palacio de Bellas Artes both in Mexico City. This same year, the company also performed at dance festivals in Colima, Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo among others.

In 2009, Tandem Cia de Danza received for third consecutive year the financial support Apoyo a Grupos Artísticos Profesionales México en Escena granted by the National Fund for Culture and Arts. The company began this year performing in Mexico City at Teatro Legaria, Teatro Benito Juárez and several high schools of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Later in the year, the company performed at the opening of MIDO 09 festival, at Teatro Alcalá in Oaxaca, Teatro Romo de Vivar in Pachuca, Teatro Raúl Flores Canelo at National Center for the Arts and Teatro de la Ciudad where they presented the premiere of “50 Sentidos” (“50 Senses”) created by choreographer Marco Antonio Silva.
